JARDIM PORCELANICO 2011

Gulbenkian Foundation Lisbon
As part of a Fellowship with the Gulbenkian Science Institute in Portugal, the cellular structures and patterns of Portuguese wild flora were used to create a collection of prints in collaboration with the Portuguese manufacturer Vista Alegre Atlantis. The prints were applied to a collection of their plates selected for their irregular profile in a sympathetic reference to the soft cellular shapes in the prints. The plates are laid out in a loose cellular structure echoed by the image of a complete plant section printed onto the canvas on which they sit. Intended as a powerful visual statement, a dêjuener sur l’herbe for a new century, the work reminds us of the ways in which the images of science increasingly seep into our daily lives.
