ZONA PELLUCIDA - ZONA LUCIDA 2014

An oocyte is the beginning of life; it is the germ cell prior to meiotic maturation, the process by which the oocyte develops into an egg. Surrounding the egg is the zona pellucida, a glycoprotein membrane responsible for binding spermatozoa. As with life, so it is with art, a point of contact, the moment of inception triggered by a fertile observation or a linguistic descriptor. The zona pellucida suggests a boundary, a fragile skin that enfolds and yet is penetrated. The film fuses a series of drawings, images of glass being formed in the furnace and the transmission of light and movies of oocytes projected through the glass to create a personal response to the collaboration with Melina Schuh at the MRC in Cambridge.
