Arabadopsis
The front cover of the June issue of American Science featured my image of a Arabadopsis seedling developed in collaboration with Enrico Coen and Robert Kelly-Bellow for the department of Cell and Development Biology at the John Innes Centre Norwich. It continues my collaboration with plant scientists in which images are created using advanced microscopy techniques.

The seedling with weakened cell adhesion was treated with an inhibitor of the growth hormone brassinosteroid. Brassinosteroid inhibition slows epidermal growth, which constrains growth of external tissue causing mechanical stresses and opening cracks as epidermal cells are pulled apart.

In an interview with Emily Peterson, photography editor of Science, I discuss my collaboration with Enrico Coen and the way in which I develop my images in a way thet reach audiences beyond the constraints of scientific publishing.
